Dulwich Picture Gallery is England’s first public art gallery: it was founded in 1811 when Sir Francis Bourgeois RA bequeathed his collection of old masters “for the inspection of the public”.
The paintings provide a perfect introduction to art in the age of Baroque. The outstanding collection of seventeenth and eighteenth century old master paintings includes major works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Murillo, Poussin, Watteau, Gainsborough, Rubens, Tiepolo and Canaletto. Around three hundred and fifty works are on permanent display. The Gallery also mounts a series of international loan exhibitions, which contribute to its reputation as an important venue for art lovers.
